JUSTICE are delighted to announce today that Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe will take on the role of Vice-Chair of JUSTICE Scotland, succeeding Catherine Smith QC as Vice-Chair of the Scottish branch of the law reform charity.

JUSTICE has been at the forefront of law reform in the United Kingdom since 1957, aiming to promote a fairer and more accessible justice system for all, carrying out research and generating practical, workable recommendations for reform. JUSTICE has a history of scrutinising and challenging developments within the justice system that threaten the country’s adherence to human rights and the rule of law. JUSTICE Scotland was established in 2012, following JUSTICE’s successful intervention in Cadder v HM Advocate, and focuses on pertinent issues within the Scottish justice system.

JUSTICE Chief Executive, Fiona Rutherford said:

“We welcome Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe as the new Vice-Chair of JUSTICE Scotland. Seonaid’s experience in academia and as a Scots qualified solicitor along with her commitment to access to justice, pro bono work, and legal education will be invaluable to JUSTICE Scotland’s upcoming work. We are thrilled to welcome her to the team.”

Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe said:

“It is a real privilege to be appointed Vice Chair for JUSTICE Scotland.  As Chair and Vice Chair, Shelagh McCall QC and Catherine Smith QC have worked tirelessly and I am very grateful to them. Access to justice is a fundamental right which must be protected and defended. I look forward to working with Almira Delibegović-Broome QC as Chair, the wider JUSTICE staff team and our membership to create a fairer, more accessible and more equal justice system in Scotland.”

Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe is a Lecturer in Law at Glasgow Caledonian University.  Prior to qualifying as a Scots lawyer, Seonaid worked at the International Criminal Court. Domestically, she trained with a large commercial law firm before working for the Government and, latterly, as a solicitor in a law centre specialising in migrant and refugee rights. In her current role, Seonaid supports the work of the Glasgow Caledonian University Law Clinic. Seonaid is the co-founder of RebLaw Scotland and sits on the Steering Committee of ProBonoSkills.com. Seonaid is a graduate of the University of Glasgow (LLB, LLM, DPLP) and is currently undertaking doctoral research. In 2020 she was named one of Young Women Scotland’s ’30 under 30.

Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe will be taking over from Catherine Smith QC on 21 June 2022.
