A fair and effective criminal justice system is vital to a safe and just society. It affects not only victims and defendants, but also witnesses, families, and whole communities.
Right now, the system is under immense pressure – with long court delays, overcrowded prisons, and entrenched inequalities.

We are working on five main projects to improve the criminal justice system.
Defending trial by jury
We are working to safeguard the right to trial by jury to protect public trust in the legal system and prevent more miscarriages of justice.
Tackling court delays
We are exploring practical, long-term solutions to reduce delays and improve the efficiency of the courts.
AI & disclosure in criminal cases
We are exploring how AI could support prosecutors with disclosure in criminal cases (i.e. deciding what material to share with the defence), while ensuring safeguards are in place to protect fair trials and prevent miscarriages of justice.
Ending misuse of drill music as evidence
We are working with the University of Oxford and United Borders to co-produce training for legal professionals on the use of music as evidence in criminal proceedings.
Access to legal advice in Scottish police stations
We are working to increase the uptake of legal advice in Scottish police stations and improve understanding of the needs of vulnerable people through research and engagement with lawyers, police and detainees.
