Women free from violence: A Twenty-first century Convention?
The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence came into force on 1 August 2014. So far 15 European states have become parties – the UK has signed, but is yet to ratify the Convention. This Human Rights Day, Professor Christine Chinkin will consider the value added by the Convention to the existing international and domestic legal framework and highlight its comprehensive and holistic approach to addressing violence against women.
This year’s speaker:
Christine Chinkin is Professor of International Law at the London School of Economics and a barrister at Matrix Chambers. Professor Chinkin’s main interests are in public international law, especially the law of treaties, human rights, with emphasis on the protection of women’s rights, and domestic and international dispute resolution. Together with Hilary Charlesworth, she won the American Society of International Law, 2005 Golder T. Burcher Medal for ‘outstanding contributions to the development or effective realisation of international human rights law’.
This year’s chair:
James Wolffe QC became an advocate in 1992 and took silk in 2007. In 2014 he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. He was First Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Ministers from 2002 to 2007, and served as an Advocate Depute from 2007 to 2010.
