Our governance

JUSTICE was founded in 1957. It has been registered as a charity since in 1986 and is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated in June 1996. JUSTICE is a membership organisation and all members are also members of the company. Details of how our governance structure works can be found in our Articles of Association and Regulations.

JUSTICE’s work is overseen by its members – via a Council. It meets twice a year and its President is Helena Kennedy (Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws KC). The Council includes prominent members of the legal profession and academic world who are appointed at JUSTICE’s Annual General Meeting, which all members are eligible to attend.

JUSTICE’s members elect – the Board – to govern the day-to-day running of the organisation. The JUSTICE Board meets at least four times per year and is chaired by Peter Binning. Smaller sub-committees oversee finance and fundraising.
