We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming lecture, ‘”Banging the Table” and Reforming the Law in the Pearl of Africa: A Commentary on the Struggle for the Rule of Law in Contemporary Uganda’,  taking place at the Inner Temple Lecture Theatre on Tuesday 11th March.

Delivered by Professor Oloka-Onyango, this lecture will offer an in-depth examination of Uganda’s complex history with democratic freedoms, political accountability, and human rights, all within the broader context of contemporary African struggles for the rule of law.

Uganda, since its independence in 1962, has experienced ongoing struggles over the protection of democratic freedoms and political accountability. The lecture will explore key issues affecting Uganda today, such as the enduring influence of militarism, the challenges faced by sexual minorities following the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, and the contentious political dynamics surrounding the future of President Yoweri Museveni’s four-decade tenure.

Professor Oloka-Onyango will analyze how these issues pose significant challenges to the enhancement of constitutionalism and the protection of the Rule of Law, both in Uganda and globally.
