At a time when the interplay between judges and politics is increasingly taking centre stage, JUSTICE and the South African High Commission are pleased to invite you to a special conversation.
As a former President of the Supreme Court (2012-2017), Lord Neuberger presided over a number of politically charged cases, including the Gina Miller Brexit appeal. There are few better qualified to discuss our constitution’s ability to deal with political cases.
Albie Sachs was one of the first Justices appointed by Nelson Mandela to the South African Constitutional Court on which he served from 1994 to 2009. As an advocate who was active in the anti-apartheid movement, he was detained without trial in solitary confinement for five months. He later lost an arm and the sight in one eye following a car bomb in Mozambique, which had been planted by the Security Police of the apartheid era.
Sir Nick Stadlen was a High Court judge from 2007 to 2013. In June this year, his film ‘Life Is Wonderful: Mandela’s Unsung Heroes’ won the award for Best International Film at the South African International Documentary Film Festival.
Nomatemba Tambo is a human rights advocate and diplomat, who has served as the South African High Commissioner to the United Kingdom since 2018. She is the daughter of former President of the African National Congress and leading anti-apartheid lawyer Dr. Oliver Tambo.
