Ed Miliband’s first speech as leader of the Labour party contained the commitment that Labour would take back ‘leadership’ on matters relating to civil liberties. He sought to disown some of the policies – such as the drive for 90 day pre-trial detention – that had been enthusiastically advanced by his party when in government.
He was responding to the current coalition government’s commitment to a ‘full programme of measures to reverse the substantial erosion of civil liberties and roll back state intrusion’. The Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition has also committed itself to a review of the Human Rights Act. The current political circumstances are unique and this event considered the implications of recent proposals and commitments for the future of civil liberties and human rights, both domestically and within the EU.
