Founded 60 years ago, JUSTICE is an all-party law reform and human rights organisation working to strengthen the justice system – administrative, civil and criminal – in the United Kingdom. Our vision is of fair, accessible and efficient legal processes, in which the individual’s rights are protected, and which reflect the country’s international reputation for upholding and promoting the rule of law. We are a membership organisation, largely comprised of legal professionals.
What we do
- We carry out research and analysis to generate, develop and evaluate ideas for law reform. In doing so, we draw on evidence, experience and expertise from the United Kingdom and across the world.
- We intervene in superior domestic and international courts, sharing our research, analysis and arguments with courts to support their work and promote strong and effective legal judgments.
- We promote a better understanding of the fair administration of justice among decision-makers and public servants.
We bring people together to discuss critical issues about the justice system, and to provide a thoughtful legal framework to policy debates.
We currently employ 12 staff and run a number of internship programmes throughout the year.
The JUSTICE Board
The Board is responsible for effective governance and strategic management of JUSTICE. Board members need a broad mind-set, a demonstrated commitment to the fair administration of justice and an ability to actively support the good governance of the charity. Board members are elected from the membership.
We have a Board of 15, with annual rotation of one third, meaning there are five vacancies. Of particular interest are those with experience of any of the following:
- Charity trusteeship and finance
- Fundraising and/or any other forms of income generation
- Operation of the justice system at grassroots level
- Working with those affected by deficiencies in the justice system
- Digital innovation and service delivery
We particularly encourage applications from people under 40 years old, women and ethnic minorities, who are currently under-represented on our Board.
The Board meets between four and six times per year, near to our office in St Paul’s, London at 5.30pm. These meetings tend to last around 90 – 120 minutes.
